One of the first questions I hear from expecting parents is, “Where should we have our newborn photos taken?”

The wonderful thing is that there isn’t a wrong answer. Every family has a different vision for their newborn portraits, and every location offers something unique. Whether you picture cozy moments at home, timeless portraits in a studio, or a beautiful outdoor setting filled with golden light, your session should reflect your family’s personality and the memories you want to preserve.

Let’s take a closer look at each option.

In-Home Newborn Sessions

An in-home newborn session tells the story of where your family’s newest chapter began. These sessions are relaxed, personal, and full of meaningful details that you simply can’t recreate anywhere else.

Your home is part of your story.

The nursery you spent months preparing, the rocking chair where you’ll cuddle your baby during late-night feedings, and even the family dog curled up nearby all become part of your memories. Years from now, these details often become just as meaningful as the portraits themselves.

The first few weeks with a baby can feel overwhelming. Staying home means you don’t have to worry about loading the diaper bag, timing naps around travel, or remembering every little item your baby might need. Everything is already right where you need it.

A relaxed pace.

Newborn sessions are never rushed. We take breaks whenever your baby needs to eat, be changed, or simply snuggle with mom or dad. The session flows around your baby’s needs, creating a calm experience for everyone.

Beautiful lifestyle images.

In-home sessions focus on connection more than perfection. You’ll spend time cuddling on the couch, rocking your baby, reading books to older siblings, or simply enjoying quiet moments together. These authentic interactions often become favorite images.

Things to Consider

Many parents worry that their home isn’t “photo worthy.” Please don’t stress about that.

I look for beautiful natural light rather than perfect décor. We usually use just a few rooms, such as the nursery, master bedroom, or living room, and a quick tidy-up is often all that’s needed.

Studio sessions offer a timeless, polished look that’s designed specifically for newborn photography.

If you’ve fallen in love with classic newborn portraits featuring soft blankets, simple wraps, and clean backgrounds, a studio session may be exactly what you’re looking for.

Everything is prepared for you.

The lighting, temperature, blankets, wraps, and posing areas are already set up before you arrive. You can simply relax while I take care of the details.

Consistent, timeless portraits.

Studios provide complete control over lighting, resulting in soft, flattering images no matter the season or weather outside.

Minimal distractions.

Without household items or busy backgrounds, every image keeps the focus where it belongs—on your beautiful new baby and your family’s connection.

Ideal for posed newborn portraits.

If you love those curled-up sleepy baby images or beautifully wrapped newborn portraits, a studio provides the perfect environment for creating them safely.

Things to Consider

Traveling with a newborn takes a little planning, especially during those first couple of weeks.

You’ll also want to pack everything your baby might need during the session, including diapers, bottles, extra clothes, and pacifiers if you use one.

Outdoor Newborn Sessions

Many families are surprised to learn that outdoor newborn sessions are an option—and they can be absolutely beautiful. In fact, I just did this with our 5th baby! I don’t have a lot of examples of this from my own clients, but here’s one of an older baby!

While they’re a little different from traditional newborn sessions, outdoor sessions combine the beauty of nature with genuine family connection.

Because babies need to stay warm and comfortable, I typically recommend outdoor newborn sessions only during appropriate weather.

Why Families Love Outdoor Sessions

Beautiful natural light.

There’s something magical about photographing a new family during golden hour. Soft evening light creates warm, dreamy images that are difficult to replicate indoors.

Perfect for growing families.

If you have older children, outdoor sessions give them space to move, play, and simply be themselves. Instead of asking toddlers to sit still, we can capture genuine laughter, hugs, and playful interactions.

A relaxed family-centered experience.

Outdoor newborn sessions often feel less posed and more focused on your family’s connection. We still create beautiful portraits of your baby, but the session naturally includes parents, siblings, and all the little moments in between.

Scenic locations.

Whether it’s a quiet field, a favorite park, or a tree-lined trail, nature creates a timeless backdrop that keeps the focus on your family while adding beautiful texture and color to your gallery.

Things to Consider

Outdoor sessions are weather-dependent, so flexibility is important. If temperatures are too hot, too cold, windy, or rainy, we’ll simply reschedule for another day.

Since newborns can’t regulate their body temperature as well as older children, their comfort and safety always come first. Sessions are carefully planned around the weather, and babies stay cozy and comfortable throughout the experience.
